Shoes Shoes Shoes!  Posted: Saturday, February 20 2010

Today we're going to go over bowling shoe care, purchasing, and explain what makes a bowling shoe different from regular shoes (and why you shouldn't bowl in socks/sandals/etc)

First, lets go over what makes up a bowling shoe.

Bowling shoes are special shoes worn when bowling. They are comfortable, lightweight and flexible, ideally designed for bowling purpose only. By wearing these comfortable shoes, players can achieve better performance. The essential feature that distinguishes bowling shoes from other sports or athletics shoes is the distinctive smooth sole. As these shoes are intended to be worn throughout the game, manufacturers produce these shoes to take care of the comfort of bowling champions and enthusiasts.

The upper part of a bowling shoe is made of leather of micro-fiber, and parts of the heel are made of firmer rubber. These shoes feature cushioned insoles, lined interiors and elastic straps. Players can choose from a variety of colors and styles. All these shoes ensure enhanced support and comfort while bowling.

Each shoe in a pair serves a different purpose. They are designed according to the requirements of right-handed and left-handed bowlers. One bowling shoe is for sliding, and the other is for braking. The shoe on the sliding foot is typically meant for right-handed bowlers and right for left-handed bowlers. It is soled with leather or similar material that will permit the player to slide easily to finish their delivery.

Before buying bowling shoes, one should carefully check the different features and comfort level offered by different suppliers in the market. To meet the various needs of player's, suppliers of bowling shoes are offering a variety of styles. Bowling shoes should be specially designed for right and left handed bowlers.

Bowling shoes need a good deal of care. Regular checks are needed to see that the shoe is in good condition. Today, bowling shoes are described as fashionable items. They have developed as casual shoes in terms of fashion and comfort. It's very important to keep bowling shoes clean and dry as getting the leather of your shoes wet can (and usually will) ruin them.

Now that you have a better idea about bowling shoes themselves, lets go over why one should always wear approved bowling shoes when at Kelley's Bowl.

As we just learned bowling shoes have a sliding shoe and a braking shoe, and by using these two in conjunction with each other a bowler can perform the best approach possible while under control. (Read: Not falling) They also help save repetitive impact on the knees.
When bowlers wear socks or unapproved footwear while bowling the likelihood of injury is increased by as much as 50% from slipping, falling, tripping, etc. It's also important to note that it can be considered a liability to the establishment if some one is injured while wearing improper shoes. Kelley's Bowl has a strict policy - If you aren't wearing proper shoes, you aren't bowling. Any one who refuses to follow this policy will be asked to leave. Safety is of utmost importance to us, so please bowl appropriately with the proper equipment!

Now we've learned about shoes, and why they're so important. Let's talk shoe rental and purchases.
Kelley's Bowl offers shoes for rental any time we're open. Ranging from size 7(kids) all the way up to size 20(men) with most half sizes in between, Kelley's has a shoe for every one. Our current rental prices are $2/kids, $3/18+ unless specified otherwise.
If you're an avid bowler or some one who comes by regularly, you may want to consider picking up your own shoes at our in house proshop!

When you think about it, it makes alot of sense to purchase your own shoes for a variety of reasons. Here's a list of a few reasons Kelley's recommends you buy some today.
